grapey mc fruit revisited

Posted by madra Fri, 11 Jul 2008 11:50:00 GMT

last night i spent a happy hour or three, doodling on the shrivelled remains of ‘grapey mc fruit’ my first citrus victim.

i was mainly just practicing laying down lines and curves and trying to get a bit more control on my cross-hatching and shading.  i know i should probably have started afresh on a new grapefruit, but have you seen the price of the feckers? - about 35p each at my local asda!

anyway, there were a few moments while i was scratching away, where i completely forgot to concentrate on angle of approach, needle depth, speed of hand versus speed of machine - and all the myriad of other things involved in the art of tattooing - and found i was just ‘drawing’.  hooray! - i presume those fleeting moments were the tattooist’s equivalent of ‘being in the zone’.

anyway, here’s fruity.  now sporting a complete sleeve - or should that be ‘peel’?

first go on a grapefruit

no proper stencil equipment yet. so i had to pinprick along the lines of the printout and then go over it wi a marker so that [hopefully!] enough ink would go through the pinholes to leave some kind of a guideline.

i also stuck the paper to the grapefruit wi photo-mount, to try and keep it steady while i markered it up:

whoops! - not exactly the most detailed template in the world, but it gave me enough to be gannin’ on wi’:

can anyone say ‘st. vitus dance!’ - have you ever seen shakier linework? in my defence i’ll say that i only have a box of 3RL and a box of 5RL so far and the one and only tip i’ve got is too wee for the 5s. so i had to do it all with a 3 which, as anyone will tell you, ain’t exactly forgiving on the linework!

ink used is a bottle of indian ink. i’ve ordered some proper inks, but they havenae arrived yet:

after some judicious shading it disnae look quite so shite - although it’s still pretty dire! i’m kinda pleased that i managed to make it look like my drawing style.  however, whether or not said drawing style - scratching to fuck with a pen&ink and usually ripping the paper to shreds - is one that should be transferred into the realms of working on skin is another matter.  but as i said at the start, my shading options were a bit limited through lack of choicce in the needle department:
